Everything comes directly and freshly from TOBACCO's kitchen. And that piece of haute cuisine? It's lovingly crafted by Michelin-starred chef Dennis Huwaë. Accessibility

TOBACCO is very easy to reach by public transport. The Rokin metro stops 98 steps from the theater. Additionally, Central Station is within walking distance, with the beautiful Amsterdam UNESCO city center as a backdrop. By car, you can reach De Nes within 20 minutes from the A10. You can then drop off and pick up right in front of the building. There are multiple parking garages in the immediate vicinity. Exit tickets can be arranged for the Bijenkorf (Q-park) parking garage, a five-minute walk away, and the Waterlooplein parking garage, a ten-minute walk away. Tip from the Director: park your car cheaply at the P+R in Noord and take the metro to Rokin in five minutes. TOBACCO will cover those costs.

Bereikbaarheid

TOBACCO is supermakkelijk te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. De metro Rokin stopt op 98 passen van het theater. Daarnaast is het Centraal Station op loopafstand met de prachtige Amsterdamse UNESCO binnenstad als decor. Met de auto ben je binnen 20 minuten vanaf de A10 op De Nes. Je kunt dan in- en uit stappen voor het gebouw. Voor het parkeren zijn er meerdere parkeergarages in de directe omgeving. Er kunnen uitrijkaarten geregeld worden voor parkeergarages de Bijenkorf (Q-park) op vijf minuten loopafstand en parkeergarage Waterlooplein op tien minuten loopafstand. Tip van de D’Erikteur: parkeer je auto voor een habbekrats bij de P+R in Noord en pak in vijf minuten de metro naar ’t Rokin. TOBACCO betaalt die kosten.

It takes a long time to be honest.

“It's not that bad that Corona”. That's what I heard for the first two weeks. And in the meantime we at Tobacco Theater received one cancellation after another. Colleagues who thought I was crazy for saying it will be a tsunami of misery in the events world. No, Erik, we do hear some locations complaining, but most of them don't really notice it. We are told that when we inquire…. My answer was very simple: Then they cheat and try to play nice again for the outside world. You can also say: they lie that they are cracking and do not dare to face the truth and then stand in the middle of the road and wait for the car with the large headlights to drive right over them and they will be on the sign a day later served out of a restaurant in Uitgeest. Two weeks later, the first locations already fell over and the first also dared to say that things are deteriorating very fast. Yes, if Arjen van Dijk goes… then it is no more shame. Yes, thank you the cuckoo gentlemen and ladies. What the heck is that. Hiding and burying your head in the sand is very easy. Hop to work and up the barricades. Just say honestly what is happening and see how you can deal with it in a positive way. Now a sex worker around the corner is allowed to receive her guests from the front and the back, can Joop van de Ende (or does his name say enough in these times?) That he thinks it is bad that the cultural world is not stands together (and hides itself a bit in his bunker in Blaricum) and the municipality of Amsterdam is allowed to spend 4.8 million euros to investigate where a new theater should be placed ... And the non-subsidized theaters and event locations ... they all fall over within half a year. Yes, that is all allowed these days in event country Holland. Oooooh haven't heard anyone say that he's about to fall? Believe me, that will come naturally, but one must first totter over the dam and then more dare to follow in order to report the sad news to the trade journals. And what about our TOBACCO Theater? We are proud because we saw the storm coming in time and we were able to take the measures on time. And especially because we were right to say that the weather is very difficult and that we have to put our finger in the dike to stop the outgoing money flow. And now? How is it now in event land? Big parties are organized but for the people in the industry. Whether it will be a success… I really hope so if God is with me, but I have my doubts. Feel like a party. I not yet. People are definitely going to hear how well they are doing and how well they are dealing with the covid rules now and that they only have happy and very satisfied customers. Because you don't think that they are suddenly going to say honestly how shitty things are actually going? I prefer to put my sheep on dry land first. And then I'll go to parties again and say it still sucks. Because I don't do what I really like and that is creating. Is livestream the new financial event miracle? Well no dude, it's a plaster on the wound. Although you now suddenly see locations in Doorn, Venlo and Purmerend setting up a few rats of cameras, inviting a local photographer and then proudly announcing that they have a live stream studio. It will not be. Either you do it well in the big cities of Amsterdam or Rotterdam or please not at all! But don't convert a hay barn into a studio. Just don't. And by well I mean really good in an environment where the speakers, guests and technology feel comfortable and the professional appearance of the screen splashes. Where viewers think, this is where I remain fascinated by my Mac. So not a glass cage where you can see the roofs of an industrial estate in the background and not one where you can hear the interns giggling and the connection is not fast enough. Teeth-grinding examples of locations that try to pop their heads out of the sand but try to French kiss when they have just eaten a dry biscuit. Only handy with pfeiffer .. But then what if you are not a location with a theatrical appearance, professional technicians and also no space for an audience that can continue to dine in the theater hall afterwards, together with the speakers? So what then dear friends of the event world? Do you have a moment…? In the coming period we will therefore only do fun things that we have missed or still miss in Amsterdam until at least 1 January. We are going to use our rooms very differently ... and that will be fun! What are we going to do next to our professional live stream studios in Amsterdam? “Het valt toch wel mee dat Corona”. Dat is wat ik de eerste twee weken hoorde.

En ondertussen ontvingen wij bij Tobacco Theater de ene na de andere annulering.

Collega’s die mij voor gek verklaarden dat ik zei dat het een tsunami van ellende wordt in de evenementenwereld.

Welnee Erik, we horen wel wat locaties klagen maar de meesten merken er eigenlijk niet zoveel van. Dat wordt ons gezegd als we navraag doen….

Mijn antwoord was heel eenvoudig: Dan jokken ze en proberen ze mooi weer te spelen voor de buitenwereld. Je kan ook zeggen: ze liegen dat ze barsten en durven de waarheid niet onder ogen te zien en gaan dan midden op de weg staan en wachten tot de auto met de grote koplampen dwars over hun heen rijdt en ze een dag later op het bordje worden uitgeserveerd van een restaurant in Uitgeest.

Twee weken later vielen de eerste locaties al om en durfden de eersten ook te gaan zeggen dat het toch wel heel hard achteruit holt. Ja, als Arjen van Dijk gaat… dan is het geen schande meer.

Ja, dank je de koekoek heren en dames. Wat is dat nou toch. Verschuilen en je kop in het zand steken is wel heel makkelijk. Hop aan de slag en de barricades op.

Gewoon eerlijk zeggen wat er gebeurt en kijken hoe je daar nog een beetje positief mee om kan gaan.

Nu mag een sexwerker bij ons om de hoek wel haar gasten van voren en achter ontvangen, mag Joop van de Ende (of zegt zijn naam genoeg in deze tijden?) zeggen dat ie het maar slecht vindt dat de culturele wereld niet als één man naast elkaar gaat staan (en zelf zich een beetje gaat verschuilen in zijn bunker in Blaricum) en mag de gemeente Amsterdam 4,8 miljoen euro gaan uitgeven om te gaan onderzoeken waar een nieuw theater moet komen te staan …

En de niet gesubsidieerde theaters en evenementenlocaties… die vallen binnen een half jaartje allemaal om. Ja dat mag allemaal deze dagen in evenementenland Holland.

Oooooh nog niemand dat horen zeggen dat ie op omvallen staat? Dat komt vanzelf geloof mij, maar er moet er eerst eentje over de dam wankelen en dan durven er meerdere te volgen om het droeve nieuws te gaan melden aan de vakbladen.

En dat TOBACCO Theater van ons dan? Wij staan fier overeind omdat we op tijd de storm aan zagen komen en we de maatregelen op tijd hebben kunnen nemen. En vooral omdat we gelijk hebben durven zeggen dat er heel zwaar weer op komst is en dat we de vinger in de dijk moeten zetten om de uitgaande geldstroom tegen te houden.

En nu? Hoe is het nu dan in evenementen land? Er worden grootse feesten georganiseerd maar dan voor de mensen uit de branche. Of het een succes wordt… ik hoop het waarlijk als god mij stane bij, maar heb mijn twijfeltjes. Zin in een feestje. Ik nog niet. Mensen zeker gaan aanhoren hoe goed het met ze gaat en hoe goed ze met de covid regels nu omgaan en dat ze alleen maar blije en zeer tevreden klanten hebben. Want je denkt toch niet dat ze opeens wel eerlijk gaan zeggen hoe kut het eigenlijk gaat? Ik zet dan toch liever eerst even eerlijk mijn schaapjes op het droge. En dan ga ik wel weer naar feestjes en zeg dat het nog steeds klote gaat. Want ik doe niet wat ik echt leuk vind en dat is creëren.

Is livestream dan het nieuwe financiële event wonder? Welnee joh, het is een pleistertje op de wonde. Al zie je nu wel opeens locaties in Doorn, Venlo en Purmerend een paar rits rats camera’s neerzetten, plaatselijke fotograaf uitnodigen en dan trots verkondigen dat ze een livestreamstudio hebben.

Dat wordt het dan ook niet. Of je pakt het goed aan in de grote steden Amsterdam of Rotterdam of asjeblieft helemaal niet! Maar niet een hooischuur ombouwen tot studio. Gewoon lekker niet doen.

En dan goed bedoel ik ook echt goed dus in een omgeving waar de sprekers, gasten en techniek zich prettig voelen en de professionele uitstraling van het beeldscherm afspat. Daar waar kijkers denken, hier blijf ik geboeid aan mijn Mac hangen. Dus ook geen glazen kooi waar je de daken van een industrieterrein op de achtergrond ziet en ook niet eentje waar je de stagiaires hoort giechelen en de verbinding niet snel genoeg is.

Tandenknarsende voorbeelden van locaties die hun kop weer uit het zand proberen te steken maar proberen slijmerig te tongzoenen als ze net een droog beschuitje hebben verorberd. Alleen handig bij pfeiffer..

Maar ja, wat dan wel als je geen locatie bent met een theatrale uitstraling, professionele technici en ook geen ruimte voor publiek hebt dat achteraf, gezamenlijk met de sprekers, kan blijven dineren in de theaterzaal? Ja wat dan lieve vrienden van de evenementenwereld? Heeft u even…?

De komende tijd gaan we daarom tot zeker 1 januari alleen maar leuke dingen doen die we zelf zo ontzetten hebben gemist of nog steeds missen in Amsterdam. We gaan onze zalen eens een keertje heel anders gebruiken…en dat wordt toch leuk!

Dat vertellen we natuurlijk pas over twee weken….

UvA dinner 20th MBA anniversary

Tobacco is a beautiful venue, right in the heart of the city. The theater is a modern space that exudes character, warmth, and class. Our guests enjoyed the delicious five-course buffet dinner. Despite the tight schedule, Team Tobacco managed everything perfectly and kept the timing running smoothly. We felt incredibly well-cared for and would love to return.

Team Tobacco Theater takes care of your event!

Twice a year, we organize two meetings for our business operations column as UWV, the first of which takes place in the Tobacco Theater. We have now nine conferences further and can speak of an annual tradition. And with good reason. The Tobacco Theater is an inspiring and beautiful location. The team of the theater is fantastic in supporting both the technical side and the care, including catering and organization. They think along well during the preparation and also during the event itself, the check is done regularly to see if everything is running smoothly. All this means that you can fully focus on the meeting, knowing that everything around it is in good hands.

Perfect event location

For our department day we were looking for a nice location and we found it in Tobacco Theatre! Highlights: delicious catering, very easy to reach (2 min from metro Rokin), an enthusiastic team that thought along well and an inspiring building that offered many possibilities, and a perfect connection for our employees who called in from abroad. We compared multiple locations so I can say with certainty: perfect price-quality ratio!
